Vinales to Trinidad

What can we say here, but there was almost tears. Of course I had had a largish night on the sauce and we were up at 5am…then back to sleep and up at 5:30am after a quick alarm re-set. Had a rum and cigar hangover……did I mention how much those suck…if not…they suck. Had a huge breakfast with more ham and egg waffle sangers, eggs, fruit……..bloody fruit, mango juice (god knows what they had done to it, but it was yuk) toast and honey…oh and fabbo coffee. Our new family wished us well as we strapped on the back packs and headed up the road. Good old Candido carried Tanya’s pack for her, bloody chivalrous bastard the old Candido, maybe I could learn something from him :) . We got on our um….car, that was meant to be a bus and as we left Candido had tears in his eyes. Honestly, it felt like we were leaving family.

Had a chat to some nice Irish lads on the bus and spent the rest of the day on our way back to Havana and on to Trinidad. Scenery pretty bland…already saw shitloads of sugar cane on our numerous and seemingly endless drives to QLD when I was a kid….Cuba looks very similar….I have a few flashbacks to fighting with my Sister in the back of the car.

Arrived in Trinidad at around 5:30. Our first thoughts, “what the hell have we done”. Streets are REAL cobblestone from Spain, mostly from ships ballast and bloody difficult to walk on, let alone carry 2 backpacks weighing in at a combined weight of 30kgs per person. We are harrased by guys in the street and followed by a few mangy dogs. Unfortunately we also had to walk through a market full of crappy wooden handy crafts and bongo drums. The front of the casa looks pretty ordinary, but once inside it’s a hidden gem. We are presented with a clean cool tiled interior, antique Spanish furniture and a delightful courtyard setting with nice plants, a couple of budgIes, one poor old solo love bird and the coolest pet….a small tortise with the personality of a dog, that follows us around and eats from our hands. The tortoise (that we have named…..turtle) comes to see us each night and hangs around like a bad smell at dinner time, it is pretty funny.

Had some yummo garlicy, limey fish for dinner then stayed up to 1am finishing up my photos. I promise to stay on top of them from now on.
