Let me just say that today our experience echoed that of the American visit to the Bay of Pigs. Expensive to get to, forgettable performance on arrival, all in all a bad decision all round………and that’s all I am going to say about that. Now onto food. We have trotted out our limited Spanish again and managed to get hooked up with 2 slices of Pizza and a can of orange drink all for the low low price of 20 Pesos Cuban ($AUD 1.20). At the pizza place we ran into a nice English chap and a Spaniard that were travelling together had a chat and ate our pizzas in the street. We then ended up in a REAL Cuban bar, it was full of bums and low lives, everyone but us was drinking rum……straight up, no ice, nothing, not even clean glasses. The barman was really friendly and we got stuck into the Tinima beer, at the bargain basement price of 10 CUP per beer ($AUD 0.60). Now we have been having the Crystal and the Buccaneer which are your more premium / tourista type cerveca, however the Tinima weighs in at a respectable 5.3% Alcohol Volume per 350ml……….and tastes exactly the same as Hoegaarden, albeit with slightly less fizz. In terms of taste to cost ratio, this beer is an absolute standout winner. As my newest hero and best unknown travel writer in Australia, Ian Wigham (Wiggie) would say “Alco-tourism at its finest”.
We wandered back to our Casa arm in arm, along cobble stoned streets paved with ballast from the ships of the Spanish Armada that visited the port in the 16th Century as the sun was setting, amongst real Cubans, door to door salesmen selling fresh bread were plying their wares, dogs and kids were playing baseball in the street…..Trinidad is a great place, one of our favourites so far.
Pork for dinner.
